Vision Tameside Phase Two

Ashton-under-Lyne

The Brief

Tameside Council wanted to drastically improve and modernise the former Tameside Administrative Centre. As well as this, offer better access to jobs, learning and leisure. The scheme would also be more cost effective and customer focused than its predecessor.

This project is made up of two 100 metre-long five storey buildings with a central retail space infilled. We were chosen to provide the structural package for this key project.

Our Approach

  • Steel was chosen for its flexibility when it comes to re-configuration. We designed the column layout with the ability to be adapted to a change in building requirements or tenants.
  • The building was to utilise the pre-existing piles from the previously demolished building. This was due to a faster form of construction being demanded. This meant during the installation of pile caps, the steel would be erected before the piling was completed.
  • Consequently this meant strategic planning and execution would be required, as all trades would be working on site simultaneously.
  • Vierendeel Trusses were utilised to support the cantilevered façade on each end of the building. This feature would create the striking architectural ends of the buildings.

We were scored “Very Good” across all these criteria, demonstrating our capability of handling multiples facets of the construction process.

“This project will provide high-class facilities to the people of Tameside and make a real difference in the local community.”
