The New York Stadium

Rotherham

The Brief

Rotherham United Football Club wanted to develop a new 12,000 seat stadium which met “Championship” minimum standards as of 2014/15.

The New York Stadium would live on an existing brownfield site bordering the River Don. The stadium design incorporated a stepped roof design and a ‘bowl’ style configuration. We were chosen to supply and manage the structural package.

Our Approach

  • The project programme was very time-sensitive due to nature of the football season. Meaning a turnkey solution would be provided, in time for the new season commencement.
  • Four mobile cranes were employed to erect the New York Stadium at all four stands. This would speed up the project to meet the client’s tight schedule.
  • Our fabrication facility kept to this demanding schedule, producing high quality steelwork for all four stages of the project simultaneously.
  • Due to the time constraints there was a sequential site programme. This meant multiple trades would be working on-site at the same time.
  • We ensured the presence of exclusion zones and safety measure to warn other trades of the potential operational hazards.

The Outcomes

From start to finish this project lasted 50 weeks which is astonishing given the level of complexity, care and variety of trades working on this site.

GMI commended us on our adherence to the delivery schedule and execution of their programme. More specifically our ability to assist in any area they required guidance or flexibility.

"The industry is about people and the ESS team have developed and integrated a strong Client focus mentality throughout their business which we have benefited from”
