Templeborough Biomass Power Plant

Rotherham

The Brief

Interserve were entrusted to deliver this new 45 Megawatt Biomass Power Station. The Station upon completion, would generate enough energy to supply 78,000 homes, all using green electricity.

We were chosen to manage the structural package for the Templeborough Biomass Power Plant construction. The project consists of a Fuel Silo, Electrical and Turbine buildings as well as multiple ancillary buildings.

Our Approach

  • Like many specialised industrial buildings we deliver crane unit capabilities are required. This means they  need to be fatigue sensitive structures.
  • To consider this factor, design and fabrication was performed in accordance with Execution Class 3 of which we are well-versed.
  • These cranes were designed to load cycle S9 , which is the highest possible classification for a crane unit. In addition to this the Hoisting Class was 3, the second most onerous value in the design specification.
  • This project required a specialised treatment to the steelwork. This is due to the nature of the building and the micro-environment within. We also managed this aspect of the package to reduce programme time and ensure high quality throughout.

The Outcomes

We demonstrated our hands-on approach and flexibility throughout this project. Upon completion, the power plant is now one of the largest in the UK.

We were able to deliver 132 changes from the original tender on time and within budget. These were supplied during the construction phase of the project. This meant it had minimal effect on the erection stages as well as other sub-contractors workings.

“Projects of this type are highly technical and challenging, requiring key expertise to construct, operate and maintain.”
