Mallard House DDU

Doncaster

The Brief

Buckingham Group were appointed to deliver this scheme. It would provide a new three-storey office and storage building at Network Rail’s pre-existing Maintenance Delivery Unit.

The site is an operational maintenance depot for Network Rail and will remain ‘live’ during the construction process. We were awarded to supply the structural package for this project.

Our Approach

  • As this is a ‘live site’, work involved a complex phasing and demolition strategy to avoid operational disruption to the main site.
  • This meant our project management and design stages were imperative to ensure a high quality of execution to the framing.
  • Logistics would pose a problem as the obvious route to site would have restricted the individual load capacity to 7.5ts due to the clearance width.
  • This obstacle at Friar’s Gate Bridge would have meant increasing loads to site, which has cost implications. The strategy was to use an alternative access via a light industrial estate to bypass this problem.

The Outcomes

We were able to execute the supply of the steel framework without any problems or setbacks. Since completion the building has become a pivotal part of network rails operations.

We were able to demonstrate our competence and vigilance working on live construction sites. Whereby disruptions can have a detriment to our client as well as their operations.

“This state-of-the-art facility at Marshgate will enhance both the vital work that our teams are doing in the area and the future of the railway”
