Kings Cross S1

Kings Cross

The Brief

BAM were awarded to construct a 12 storey building in the heart of Kings Cross, London. The Kings Cross S1 building offers open-plan office spaces, expansive balconies, landscape garden roof and a double height atrium, cumulating to a total of 16,000 m².

With our long-standing relationship with BAM Construction, as well as our successful history of previous projects in London’s commercial sector. We were chosen to deliver the structural package for this project.

Our Approach

  • The location of the building sits above two Thameslink tunnels so careful consideration had to go into the foundational structure and weight of the frame.
  • Our design team had to ensure the connections were both structurally sound and aesthetically appealing as many of these would be visible in the final condition.
  • We had to incorporate numerous design changes to adjust to the clients requirements, including new staircase openings.
  • We also incorporated temporary supports allowing us to erect steelwork out of the conventional order.

The Outcomes

The building was awarded an “Outstanding” in the BREEAM rating meaning we played our part in ensuring a high level of sustainability.

We were able to handle nearly 1,000 tonnes of new/altered steelwork to meet with the clients requests. We are still providing changes to the steelwork package after the handover to fulfil the desires of the client.

“Both buildings [S1 and S2] were originally designed as…concrete structures but were changed to steel frames due to cost and building weight”.
