Aldi Retail Distribution Centre

Isle of Sheppey

The Brief

DSP were chosen as main Contractor to assist Aldi’s expansion in the South-East of the United Kingdom. This project will act as a hub to over 60 stores in the region.

The site on the Isle of Sheppey is 60,000m² consisting of 14 acres of warehouse space, 3,750m² of office space, gate house and truck area. We were supplying the structural package for this new facility.

Our Approach

  • We supplied and installed over 150 thermal break-pads at 10cm thick. This was for the temperature-sensitive buildings to reduce thermal bridging and increase thermal efficiency.
  • Connection design also had to adjust to the subjected temperature of the buildings. Thereby ensuring the bolts could withstand the extreme cold (sub 28 degrees Celsius) over their long life-cycle.
  • As well as this, weld design and execution was also very important. This was also due to the low temperatures in the freezer building.
  • Logistics would be a very important consideration in this project. Large 18M trailers would be used to transport the steelwork loads across bridges to the island. Loads would have to be split economically to suit the ground conditions on site, as well as the long distances covered.

The Outcomes

We delivered the project safely and efficiently, whilst strictly adhering to the GSPs’ site program. We provided the main contractor with 76 variation changes over the course of the project to meet their building design requirements.

We were able to fabricate and deliver these changes swiftly to ensure the frictionless management of the site program.

“Having already completed one retail distribution centre for DSP, we were delighted that they wanted us to work closely with them to deliver a second on the Isle of Sheppey”
