Aintree University Hospital

Liverpool

The Brief

BAM Construction were tasked with transforming an existing hospital outside Liverpool city-centre, to meet the needs of the area. The extension would involve working adjacent to a live hospital.

The project would deliver a new urgent care and trauma centre. With state-of-the-art facilities, it would be the most modern in the region. The new care centres would have a slim-floor design connected to the existing concrete framed structure.

Our Approach

  • Site working can sometimes be difficult, however this is amplified when site is bordering a live working hospital. It requires careful planning and surgical precision to ensure a successful project.
  • The two biggest bi-products to the surrounding area would be dust/dirt particles and noise pollution. This can become a dangerous issue in a highly-sensitive environment such as a hospital.
  • So our site operations and logistic planning had to be fine-tuned to ensure minimal disruption was caused to the live working hospital.

The Outcomes

Throughout project delivery we worked closely with BAM, sharing a BIM platform to achieve a streamlined working relationship through frictionless communication.

Upon handover of the steel frame, we were scored a “Very Good” by BAM through multiple areas of project management, from conception through to completion. We have since been awarded the responsibility of additional steelwork to the main entrance in 2021.

“The structural steelwork is quite complex, because it is enclosed on three sides by the existing hospital,”
