‘Let’s build something that lasts’

The value of trusted working relationships in construction:

Chariman, and former Managing Director, Mark Denham shares what makes Elland Steel’s team stand out to clients:

‘Let’s build something that lasts’ – that’s our promise to clients at Elland Steel.

We’re focused on building strong relationships with our clients so that together we deliver striking, functional and safe buildings.

Myself, my team and our valued clients have been reviewing what makes us a trusted, respected steelwork contractor, to ensure we continue to deliver and further build on our strengths.

“Consistency, honesty and value” are what Elland’s clients get, according to Nick Heywood – contracts manager for Wates Construction. We worked with his team on the development of The Whitehaven Academy, Cumbria, delivering 405 tonnes of structural steel for the new secondary school.

He said of working together: “Elland offered experience – I’d worked with them previously, so I knew the team there and had had a good experience with them. They offered knowledge, good value and realistic pre-construction programme advice, delivered by a strong team both on- and off-site.”

Experience is key for me and my team. Working with a senior team with a combined experience of more than 100 years in the industry (between just four of us), assures our clients and suppliers of skill, expertise and understanding. Familiar faces offer our clients reassurance; knowing they’ll be working with experienced professionals with the technical understanding and commercial capability to deliver on their projects.

It’s a sentiment echoed time and again by our clients. “Elland are experienced, professional and able to deliver,” agreed Justin Kay – a senior project manager for Morgan Sindall Construction. Working together, we delivered structural steel for the University of Salford’s Science, Engineering and Environmental Building – a complex four-storey building.

He said of the project: “We chose Elland due to the complexities of the steel frame building. We needed suppliers who we know can deliver for us, and with us. We’ve worked together previously so it’s good to see familiar faces who you know you can trust. Elland are very good at managing logistics, health and safety and programme timings.”

Over the years we’ve witnessed, worked on and overcome all manner of unique scenarios and challenges, like we overcame with Justin and his team. From tight fits – whether those are the deadlines or the city centre locations – to changes in trends, not to mention the most complex structural steel requirements, working collaboratively with our clients, we deliver projects safely, on-time and on-budget.

Safety is also paramount for us. It’s one of our stand-out traits, along with “quality and collaboration”, according to Ian Fleming – a regional director for BAM Construction. We most recently delivered 5,350 tonnes of structural steel for BAM’s development of 100 and 101 Embankment, in Greater Manchester.

He said: “We have a long-standing working relationship with Elland Steel, completing many fantastic projects together. Everything is seamlessly finished – on-time, safely and to a high quality. They’re excellent when it comes to collaborative working, getting into the nitty gritty of the design and taking a professional approach to all aspects of programme delivery, particularly on compliance and safety.”

I take personal responsibility for leading a team of committed, capable professionals, passionate about our industry. And as President of the British Constructional Steelwork Association, I share both mine and my team’s expertise and experience with our sector and the wider construction sector; seeking to ensure excellence and collaboration in every project.

Our Net Promoter Score is further proof of our skill. Published earlier this year, our Customer Satisfaction Report shared the results of our first customer satisfaction survey and resulting Net Promoter Score of 75 – a score considered ‘excellent’ in any industry. Respondents to this survey remarked on our “can-do attitude”, “impressive expertise and communication” and commitment to being “proactive and collaborative”.

By valuing quality, communication and collaboration with our clients, we build both structures and relationships that last.
