Wigan Life Centre - The 'big lift'
A 1000 tonne capacity crane lifts the truss into place
A 40 metre truss weighing 53 tonnes was successfully lifted into position using a 1000 tonne capacity crane. The truss will support two floors and the roof above the centres new 25m long swimming pool. Delivered to site in sections it was assembled on the ground prior to the lift. The lifting process which was planned meticulously took approximately 10 hours to complete.
The Truss On The Ground In Preperation For The Lift
Fabrication of the truss was a complex process and involved great engineering skill and high levels of quality control. Initially the truss was trial erected in Elland Steel's fabrication shop, then split down before the sections were fully welded up. Each welded section was 100% UT tested before the truss was reconstructed and its dimensions checked again to ensure no distortion had occurred during the welding process.
