Ice Centre Sheffield
The Steel Frame During Erection

The challenge to design a steel frame within the clients cost plan and Architectural scheme requirements began in earnest some ten months prior to steel erection commencing on site.

Elland steel structures Ltd together with the design team and HBG Construction worked closely and expediently with the ultimate aim of providing the most cost effective value engineered steel frame whilst not detracting from the architectural features and scheme concepts.

Specific areas were targeted and re-visited by the whole team with the sole purpose of achieving our goals such was the effort and attention to detail in the early stages that once in production the variations were minimal.

The Steel Frame During Erection
The steel frame consisted of a four-storey central spin core structure, adopting large diameter CHS columns together with compositely designed floor beams in conjunction with profiled composite floor decking. Adjacent to this central core area are two 48m wide x 72m long rink structures. The competition & recreational ice rinks are column free spaces, achieved by the design of 48m clear span curved lattice roof trusses at 7.200m centres along the length of the building. Within the competition rink is a seated viewing area similar in construction to the premier league football grounds around the country, providing a “bowl effect” arena with unobstructed viewing to all the ice rink personnel and the paying public. With the fact that a large quantity of the steelwork on this project is a height, the client wanted a maintenance regime kept to a minimum, as such Elland Steel applied off-site a series of high quality paint systems that in conjunction with site applied decretive coat produced a treatment protection for the steelwork of 20 years to 1st maintenance. This provides the client with a solution that means the rinks will not require closure for maintenance every five or so years, together with the associated health and safety issues involved in carrying out the maintenance at heights.

Elland Steel Structures Ltd designed, supplied, manufactured and installed approximately 750 tonnes of high quality structural steelwork together with approximately 3,500 m2 of profile composite flooring, all ahead of the contractors programme and to cost budget.

The architects and checking engineers for the client was Building Design Partnership of Sheffield.

Programming and methods of construction we also developed at an early stage allowing the steelwork to be erected on a fast-track basis in a safe manner giving the opportunity for following sub trades to achieve best performance.

Elland Steel Structures Ltd were chosen as preferred supplier working within the realms of Supply Chain Management, the project highlighted the mutual benefits widely recognised in the construction industry as a key competent skill.
